For as long as I can remember, I have always loved reading and I have always loved children. It is no surprise, therefore, that my professional life would contain these two things. I graduated from WITS University in South Africa and went on to practice as a speech language pathologist for fifteen years.
Immigrating to America in 2009, I then homeschooled my two children for a few years. During that time I found myself with a son who was an avid bookworm and a daughter who avoided reading like the plague! In 2012 we moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, where we finally found out the reason for my daughter’s reading and spelling challenges, which catapulted me into the fascinating field of dyslexia. Fortunately, my daughter enrolled in a parent participation charter school, where I received training in the Barton Reading & Spelling System and volunteered as a reading tutor, my daughter being my first student! I was hooked! I started Equipped To Read in 2013 and become a certified Barton Reading and Spelling tutor in 2014, with subsequent training at the advanced level. Since that time, I have had the privilege of walking with many children into the wonderful world of reading.
Recognizing there was a need to help my students succeed, not only in reading and spelling, but with written expression as well, I became a registered instructor with IEW in 2021. It remains my mission and passion to see students thrive in the areas of reading and writing.
In thirty years of working with children, I have experienced how every child learns differently, and I believe in meeting students where they are at. Whether your child needs support due to dyslexia or is ready to advance their writing skills, I provide structured, individualized instruction that builds both skill, competence and confidence.
