“Almost every child can learn to read—if we teach them the way they need to be taught.”
— Dr. Sally Shaywitz, author of Overcoming Dyslexia
I use the Barton Reading & Spelling System, which is based on the Orton-Gillingham (structured literacy) approach—a proven, multi-sensory method that helps students with dyslexia and other reading challenges succeed. It’s structured, explicit, step-by-step, and tailored to each child’s pace, helping to make reading and spelling accessible.
At Equipped to Read, services include:
Complimentary initial consultation
Barton screening (must pass to start the Barton program)*
Private, personalized reading and spelling tutoring sessions, minimum 2 x 50 min sessions per week
Regular feedback plus written reports after the completion of each level of the Barton System
Close collaboration with parents, relevant professionals and school teachers
Suggestions for classroom accommodations to help encourage academic success
Lending library for students
In-person, online or hybrid options available
*If a student does not pass the Screening, I offer the option to start with Foundation in Sounds before starting the Barton System. This program builds auditory skills needed to be successful in Barton.
"When you're teaching kids to write, you're teaching them to think. Writing is the window through which all thinking starts.”
— Sheryl Block
The goal of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) is to train students to become competent, confident, communicators—no matter their learning style or challenges. This proven, systematic program gives students the tools they need to succeed.
Much like structured literacy programs, IEW is a structured approach to writing, removing the stress of what to write, so students can focus on how to write.
IEW is especially effective for children with learning difficulties, including dyslexia, ADHD, ASD and processing disorders. With clear models, checklists, and lots of guided practice, even the most reluctant writers can experience success.
At Equipped to Read, writing classes include:
Individual one hour writing classes (1-2 weekly, small group classes on request)
Student Structure & Style, level A & B covering all nine IEW writing units
Weekly homework assignments are given to practice all concepts taught
